Cotton mouth

Cotton mouth is also known as Columnaris Bacterial. This is not a common disease in goldfish. It looks like fungus but is not

fungus. It is a bacterial infection, which can be prevented by Quarantining new fish, improving the quality of water and reducing organic debris in the tank.
A goldfish suffering from cotton mouth can be identified easily. There will be cotton thread like structures blowing out of its mouth. Its behaviour will be lethargic. Its fins will be clamped. A thick heavy slime coat will develop and the skin will become dry.
The best treatment is to give the infected fish medicated food consisting of potassium permagnet.  An infection of anti-bacterial medication should be given. The most important thing is to keep the goldfish in absolutely clean water.
